Manchester Airport is the UK's busiest airport outside London, with direct train access to the city centre in just 18 minutes. That 18 minutes is the critical number — it means you almost never actually need to “stay at the airport”.
The 3am flight rule
If your check-in is before 5am, stay at the airport. Everyone else should stay in central Manchester — you'll get a better apartment, far better food options, and a quick train in the morning.
Transfer options
- Train: 18 minutes from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport, every 10 minutes during the day, less frequent overnight. £4.80 single.
- Uber / taxi: £25–£35 from the city centre, 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
- Metrolink tram: 55 minutes from St Peter's Square. Cheapest option (£5) but significantly slower.

Other tips
- Set two alarms. Manchester trains occasionally have engineering works overnight.
- Budget 2.5 hours from leaving your apartment to being airside for international flights.
- Ask us for a taxi recommendation if you've got a lot of luggage — some local firms beat Uber by a clean £10.
