Where to Stay Near Old Trafford: The Manchester United Matchday Guide

Old Trafford is the most famous football ground in the country — and one of the most awkward to plan a stay around if you don't know Manchester. Here's how to do it properly.

Where to stay

Old Trafford sits in Trafford, just across the Manchester Ship Canal from the city centre. Three good options:

  • City centre (Deansgate / Spinningfields): Our top pick. 10–15 minute tram to the ground, tonnes of pre-match pubs and restaurants, and you're walking distance to Piccadilly Station for your journey home.
  • MediaCityUK / Salford Quays: Closer to the ground as the crow flies and waterfront-pretty, but fewer matchday pubs. Good for couples wanting a quieter base.
  • Northern Quarter: Slightly further, but unbeatable for food, music and nightlife before and after the match.

Getting to the stadium

  • Metrolink: Take the Altrincham or East Didsbury line to Old Trafford stop — a 5-minute walk from the ground. Trams every few minutes on matchdays.
  • Train: Manchester United Football Ground station is 2 minutes from the Megastore. Only runs on matchdays.
  • Walking from the city centre: About 45 minutes along the canal — nice in summer, grim in January.

Parking near Old Trafford

Stadium parking is limited to season ticket holders and hospitality guests. For everyone else, book a matchday parking spot in advance via JustPark or Stadium Parking Services. Easier option: stay somewhere with included parking and tram in.

Best pre-match pubs

  • The Bishop Blaize — The most iconic Reds pub. Expect songs, expect scarves.
  • The Trafford — Big beer garden, huge screens, family friendly.
  • Sam Platt's — Ship-canal-side pub, properly Mancunian, excellent food.

After the final whistle

Don't queue for the tram with 70,000 other people. Either:

  • Wait 30 minutes with a pint at a nearby pub until the crowd thins.
  • Walk 15 minutes along the canal to Salford Quays and tram from there.
  • Walk 45 minutes into town — the best option on a nice evening.

Stadium tours & museum

Not going to the match? The Old Trafford Stadium Tour & Museum is worth the price — dressing rooms, the tunnel, the manager's seat and the trophies. Book in advance online.
