Whether it's a Champions League night or a Saturday 3pm kick-off, staying near the Etihad is half the experience. Here's our no-nonsense guide to getting the best out of matchday — where to stay, how to get there, and where to grab a proper pre-match pint.
How close is “close enough”?
The Etihad Campus sits just east of the city centre — about a 25-minute walk or a 10-minute Metrolink ride from Manchester Piccadilly. For most fans, staying in the city centre or Ancoats is the sweet spot: you get all the pre-match buzz of Deansgate and the Northern Quarter, plus a very short transfer to the ground.
If you're driving up from out of town, look for apartments with free parking — matchday parking around the stadium is limited and expensive.
Best ways to get to the Etihad
- Metrolink (easiest): Take the Ashton-under-Lyne line to Etihad Campus. Trams run every few minutes on matchdays.
- Walk: From the Northern Quarter or Ancoats, it's a flat 20–25 minute walk along the Ashton Canal — actually a lovely pre-match stretch.
- Taxi / Uber: Fine before kick-off, painfully slow afterwards. Post-match surge pricing is brutal — walk or tram instead.

- Mikey's Bar — The classic City pub right by the stadium. Gets rammed, gets the job done.
- Cafe Football — Family-friendly, food-first, huge screens for other matches.
- Port Street Beer House (NQ) — Best craft selection in Manchester. Have a couple and walk the canal to the ground.
- The Smithfield Tavern — Proper Northern Quarter boozer. Quieter than the city-centre chains, excellent pint.
What to eat near the Etihad
Ancoats is five minutes from the Campus and is genuinely one of Europe's best food neighbourhoods right now. For post-match celebrations, book Mana (Michelin starred), Erst (natural wine and small plates), or Rudy's Pizza for the fastest, best pizza in the city.
A note on Champions League and big nights
European nights often have unusual kick-off times (8pm, sometimes later). Book apartments with late check-in or self-access options — a lot of hotels lock their reception after 11pm, which is exactly when you'll be arriving back post-match. Every City Superhost apartment has 24/7 self-check-in.
Staying the weekend? Build it into a Manchester city break
Mix matchday with a proper Manchester weekend. Saturday morning: coffee at Foundation in the NQ. Afternoon: the match. Saturday night: cocktails at Schofield's. Sunday morning: brunch at Federal, then Manchester Museum (free entry) before your train home.
